Columbus City Council Meeting Highlights
• HONORING A LONGTIME COLUMBUS RECREATION AND PARKS EMPLOYEE: Council President Shannon G. Hardin is sponsoring resolution 0188x-2021 to commend and thank Ms. Teresa Featherstone for her outstanding service to the City of Columbus, beginning in 1981, and culminating in a 27-year tenure as the Manager of the Barnett Community Center.
• PLANTING NEW TREES TO GROW URBAN CANOPY: President Pro Tem Elizabeth Brown, chair of the Recreation and Parks Committee is sponsoring ordinances 2308-2021 and 2309-2021 to authorize the Director of Recreation and Parks to enter into contracts with Custom Lawn Care & Landscaping, LLC in the total amount of $461,675 to plant 505 trees in Milo-Grogan and Southwest Columbus. Increasing the tree canopy through new plantings helps reduce storm water runoff, air pollution, and utility costs to nearby homes and businesses. New plantings are critical parts of the city’s Urban Forestry Master Plan and Climate Action Plan.
• FUNDING THE OPERATIONAL CAPACITY OF CELEBRATEONE: Councilmember Priscilla Tyson, chair of the Health and Human Services Committee is sponsoring ordinance 2688-2021 to accept $100,000 in funds from the Central Ohio Hospital Council on behalf of Ohio Better Birth Outcomes to support the operational capacity of CelebrateOne.
• OFFERING AN OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR DIRECTLY FROM RESDIENTS: Councilmember Emmanuel V. Remy will host virtual community hours this Thursday, October 28th from 12-1:30p to listen to ideas and concerns of Columbus residents. This WebEx event will give residents the opportunity to talk with Councilmember Remy and his staff, share what is important to them, and propose ways Council can work with the community. • CELEBRATING THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING TRUST’S 20TH ANNIVERSARY: Councilmember Shayla Favor, chair of the Housing Committee is sponsoring resolution 0191X-2021 to recognize and commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Affordable Housing Trust (AHT). For over 20 years, the Affordable Housing Trust for Columbus and Franklin County has served as a catalyst for the production and rehabilitation of affordable homes while encouraging home ownership and strengthening neighborhoods. Lark Mallory, the newly appointed CEO of AHT, will accept the resolution.
• PROVIDING EMPLOYMENT FOR BOYS AND YOUNG MEN OF COLOR: Councilmember Rob Dorans, chair of the Neighborhoods Committee is sponsoring ordinance 2593-2021 to expand youth employment and enrichment opportunities for at-risk boys and young men of color ages 14 to 24 by contracting with the African American Male Wellness Walk. The organization will provide employment for at-risk boys and young men to raise awareness of the organization and its mission.
