We are checking out Toram Online and you may have heard of it as it's come out free to play on steam this week. It is not a new game however, as this one has been out on mobile devices for quite some time. So should you be investing your time on this free Japanese mmo on steam? Well opinions are divided. I'm going to be searching for some cool free steam games over the next month, so subscribe if you're a fan and let me know which titles you have your eye on.
Toram online definitely feels like an old school mmo and there's not a lot that's going to occur over your opening that hours that will feel original. You get your character creator, go through a tutorial system before starting your classic mmo quest. You know the ones, get this go there, attack some monsters and then go back and get your loot. It's all pretty cruisy.
It's hard to judge a game like Toram Online in terms of the visuals, as my first thought upon seeing a pc and mobile online rpg was genshin impact, and whilst this game doesn't even come close to matching up to the visuals and design of that game, it doesn't really try to either. It's classic japanese gaming design, something out of a playstation 2 or 3 title you might say. But a lot of what you do see, is quite pretty, and it's a nice enough game to look at, although the audio side of things is pretty lacking.
Toram Online will take you through this series of quests to teach you a bit about the lore of the game, including a cataclysm style event that seems to have broken everything, and dragons, good and bad that are playing a pivotal role in the narrative. There's a lot of reading here if you want it, but I quite enjoyed the story as it unfolded.
Fighting is pretty interesting, with large numbers of enemies that will wander around the map until you choose to interact and take them on. And everything has been quite on the easy side so far. I haven't got the handle of changing targets quite yet which can make some of the boss fights quite challenging, but I'm enjoying having lots of skills points and character upgrades to add on.
Looking through some of the steam reviews, it looks as if lots of people are having a fair amount of trouble with stability issues and crashes, and I have to say that i haven't had any of this so far. The load times were pretty long early but have become pretty quick as i made my way through the early parts of the game. Someone looking for a time dump style mmo might be recommended to check out Toram online.
Let me know what you think of the game!
