The Advanced Photon Source Upgrade (APS-U) transforms today's APS into a world-leading, storage-ring-based, hard X-ray light source that equips scientists with a vastly more powerful tool for investigating and improving the materials that comprise nearly
every aspect of our lives.
APS-U will allow researchers to see things at scale they’ve never seen before, opening new frontiers and breakthroughs in basic science and helping to solve pressing problems across a wide range of industries.

From looking at the way pollutants behave in the environment to the creation of new vehicles and airplanes with new materials to the possibility of room-temperature superconductors, future pivotal discoveries enabled by the APS-U are seemingly boundless.
Other applications could include:
o Converting sunlight into energy and storing it using revolutionary systems
o Developing cleaner, more efficient biofuels
o Detailing mechanisms by which pollutants move through soil
o Transforming our understanding of the structure of the Earth’s core
o Developing new drugs to treat infections resistant to today’s antibiotics
o Improving our understanding of how the brain processes and stores information using neurons
