IDF fire tear gas at journalists during peaceful West Bank protest
International reporters in the West Bank were caught in an Israeli tear gas attack outside Ofer Prison on Thursday. As Palestinian demonstrators and observers gathered outside the prison, Israeli forces fired tear gas canisters among protesters and media crews, who dispersed into clouds of choking smoke. Among the affected were journalists from RT, Sky News and the Maan news agency.
Israeli forces asked both journalists and protesters to retreat 60 meters before launching the tear gas into the crowd. Thursday's protest railed against the death of a 22 year-old Palestinian male, Mohammed Asfour, who died of brain injuries after being shot during clashes in Abud village, north of Ramallah. Asfour was protesting in support of four Palestinians on hunger strike in Israeli jails.
In recent weeks, the sprawling Israeli prison, built on territory claimed by the Palestinian authorities, has been the site of countless clashes with Israeli forces, leaving scores injured.
Some 4,800 Palestinians are currently held in Israel jails. Up to 178 languish under the Israel's policy of 'administrative' detention, whereby suspects are held without trial for six month renewable terms based on classified evidence.
