#Breguet
One of the most prestigious watch brands in the world: Breguet really offers the best of horology. It was founded by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1775.
And he was man so brilliant, his name is written in gold on the Eiffel Tower. Abraham-Louis Breguet was born in Switzerland in 1747 but moved to France at the age of fifteen to learn watchmaking. His creations drew the attention of the noblesse and working from the quai d’horloge in the shadow of the Notre Dame, he soon made fame as the watchmaker of the fine fleur, making some of the most complicated watches in history and even the first wristwatch. Mr. Breguet died in 1823 in Paris but what he started is now considered one of the oldest watch companies in the world.
Editor’s note
The video mentions Breguet as the maker of the first perpetual calendar for a wrist watch. This should be 'purpose built perpetual calendar for a wrist watch'.
Why I chose it
I chose this watch to celebrate the 220th anniversary of the tourbillon. This grand complication has gotten a meaning that is so much larger than it meant to have.
This watch is absolutely beautifully detailed: literally every millimeter counts. I mean, just look at the bottom of the dial. A few millimeters show the guilloché pattern, the engraving, the anglage and brushed finishing, the tourbillon, the breguet overcoil… it really shows the most astonishing hand-finishing horology has to offer.
Breguet even added a second Grand Complication: the perpetual calendar. Which is crazy enough, but it even has a Breguet-worthy retrograde date hand.
Celebrating 220 years of the Tourbillon
In the days of Mr. Breguet, watches were mainly carried in pockets, which affected the accuracy of the movements. Mr. Breguet found a solution for this problem that was… a problem in itself: the tourbillon.
The idea was to compensate for the physical effects of keeping the watch in one position. This is done by creating a cage that would rotate on its own axis and have the balance, spring and escapement held within it.
Which is quite hard to explain and even harder to make function properly. But how long exactly he took… we don’t know.
Mr. Breguet was granted the patent in 1801, but the Breguet archives show that he had been working on it for years at that point. Of the forty pieces he made, some thirty tourbillons still exist. Each piece took some six years to make and not two of them are the same…
Now, one very common misunderstanding comes with the name itself. Although tourbillon now translates as whirlwind, Breguet meant something different with it. He referred to a planetary system that rotates on its own axis and the energy that causes the rotation of the planets around the sun.
