On September first, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. The date is regarded as the beginning of the World War II. In the early hours, a German warship opened fire on the Polish garrison in the Westerplatte peninsula in what was then the Free City of Danzig. At about the same time, bombs rained down on the small Polish town of Wielun, killing 1,200 civilians. It was the German Luftwaffe's first air raid on Poland and the first of many war crimes to come. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Polish President Andrzej Duda were on hand for ceremonies in Wielun, marking the moment 80 years ago when history's deadliest conflict began. Many in Poland believe Germany should pay reparations for the damage it inflicted.
