The Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungthang Dewa chhenbi Phodrang. meaning ""The palace of great happiness". This is the second oldest and second-largest Dzong in Bhutan after Trongsa Dzong.
The Dzong is located between the Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (Female) river in the Punakha–valley. After the confluence of these two rivers, the main river is known as Sankosh River, which crosses Bhutan–India border meets the Brahmaputra River in India.
Punakha is one of the most beautiful destinations in Bhutan. and a popular destination in Asia. This is a place that has the best natural landscapes and the old Buddhist Monasteries, and Tibetan architecture of Bhutan
The most popular festival of Punakha is Punakha Tshechu. One of the best annual religious festivals " Tsechu " is held in Punakha Dzong. The Tsechu featured a variety of religious dances basically performed by Buddhist monks. This festival celebrated by the end of February or the beginning of March accordingly to the Bhutanese calendar.
The Dzong was built in the 17th century, but severely damaged in 1994 flood and was renovated. This Dzong is the winter home for monks from Central Bhutan as the Punakha climate is very warm in winter. Inside the Dzong have an old Bodhi tree and beside the Stupa. It's really worth to visit this place. The architecture is similar to most other dzongs of Bhutan. The bridge over the river which connects the mainland to the dzong is Superb. The design and architecture have lasted centuries and are still maintained in a beautiful manner. The paintings, architectures inside the Dzong are really breathtaking and inspiring. Photography is not permitted in a few places inside the Dzong.
The inside has a great architecture with wonderful open courtyards and an indoor area with murals telling the life story of Buddha. This was one of our favorite stops on our Bhutan trip.
