It is popularly known that the current system of appointing judges is not laid down in the Constitution, rather something that has developed through a series of judgments over the course of the years.
The first (1981), second (1993) and third (1998) judges cases led to the formation of the Collegium and its workings. The fourth judges case (2015), also called the famous NJAC judgment, laid down the procedure of how the Collegium and the government were expected to work together while appointing judges to the High Courts and the Supreme Court.
