This video is of the ride up the K1 Express Gondola and skiing down Great Northern, an intermediate/beginner ski trail located at Killington Ski Resort. The video was filmed in late April on the closing weekend for the K1 Gondola and the Killington Peak area of the ski resort.
The K1 Gondola is a detachable eight-person gondola located at Killington Ski Resort in Killington, Vermont. The Gondola runs from the K1 Base Area to near the summit of Killington Peak and to the highest lift-serviced skiing at the resort. From the top of the lift, skiers and riders can access almost all of the terrain located at the ski resort. Most of the terrain located directly off the lift consists of intermediate and expert terrain of which some are groomed and some are not. The gondola is usually one of the two lifts to open first in the fall in the East, along with the nearby North Ridge Quad. During the first few weeks of the season, skiers and riders often have to walk down a catwalk from the top of the gondola to the top of the North Ridge Quad to access skiing and walk back up the catwalk and download the gondola to return to the base area. The lift was installed in 1997 by Poma, directly replacing an old double chairlift and more indirectly replacing an old four-person gondola. The lift also spins in the summer and fall months for scenic lift rides and mountain biking.
Great Northern is an intermediate/beginner ski trail located at Killington Ski Resort. The trail runs from the top of Killington Peak, across the Killington and Snowdon areas, and back down to the K1 Base Area. The trail starts off the back of the summit. and quickly makes a sharp 90 degree turn to the left. The trail is pretty flat at the top, as it is for most of the way down. The trail then runs underneath the gondola for a quick second before exiting off to the skier's right. The trail then traverses across the North Ridge Area, crossing under the North Ridge and Canyon chairlifts and crossing through trails such as Rime, Reason, and East Fall. The trail then turns to the slight right and runs straight for a while before narrowing and becoming even flatter. The trail traverses over to the Snowdon Area of the mountain, which it traverses across. The trail passes through a few trails before heading through two tunnels, under the Bunny Buster and Great Bear trails. The trail then merges with Caper, which comes from the top of Ramshead, and turns into a beginner trail. The trail is pretty flat and eventually enters another tunnel under Chute. The trail then reaches the K1 Base Area where I got back on the K1 Gondola. However, when open, skiers and riders can continue down to the Ramshead Area on the lower portion of Great Northern.
