Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has resigned after losing a referendum on his plan to reform the constitution.
Italy's interior ministry estimates that only forty-one percent of Italians voted for reform, while fifty-nine percent rejected it.


"Tomorrow afternoon I will call a cabinet meeting and I will thank my colleagues for an extraordinary adventure. It has been a united, strong and compact team. I will then go to the Quirinale , where I will tender my resignation to the president."

The vote was also seen as a referendum on Renzi, who has faced a populist backlash due to persistent high rates of unemployment and concerns about the ongoing migrant crisis.
And in wake of the referendum loss,... Asian markets mostly fell,... with the euro dropping to a 20-month low in Asia due to the political uncertainties in Italy , which could have effect on nationalist forces in other parts of Europe.
Korea's benchmark Kospi inched down 0.25-percent, while Japan's Nikkei fell 0.64-percent and the Shanghai composite shed 1.31 percent.
