Prime Minister Modi has guaranteed that the Indian economy will become the third largest in his third term - implicitly claiming that he will return to power for a third term in 2024.
Going by the current growth rate of India and other major world economies - India indeed looks set to become the third-largest economy by 2027.
But a closer look at the data reveals there is more to the story than meets the eye.
The U.S. economy is roughly 7 times India's size currently - it will still be 6 times larger than India's economy in 2027.
And China's economy will be five times India's economy four years from now.
But India will only marginally surpass both Germany and Japan - the two countries it's set to overtake.
And not to forget, the real story lies in GDP per capita - where India is far behind the developed countries.
On this edition of India Tonight, we ask a trillion-dollar question - how long will it take India to become a developed country? And what are the growth engines and challenges ahead?
