Sorrento is a very popular tourist destination in Italy, located on the Sorrentine Peninsula, between Mount Vesuvius and the Amalfi Coast, overlooking the Bay of Naples. Perched on a high cliff overlooking the sea, Sorrento embraces the Gulf of Naples, lying on a peninsula which separates the Gulf of Salerno from the Gulf of Naples. The geographical backbone of the peninsula is formed by the Lattari Mountains, which culminate in Mount Sant’Angelo (1,443 m). Located in Campania region, 46.5 km away from Naples, Sorrento has Ischia and Procida on the horizon an offers spectacular views of Vesuvius. Probably of Greek origin, the town was a Roman resort, named Surrentum, a favorite residence of the aristocracy. In 1137, Sorrento was conquered by Roger II of Sicily and annexed to the Kingdom of Sicily. The lively resort town with a scenic location offers beautiful coastal views, plenty of sunshine and a laid-back atmosphere. Sorrento is a tourist destination, enjoyable in any season due to the mild climate, the scent of the gardens and the panoramic terraces overlooking the sea. The houses are surrounded by a lot of greenery, orange groves, lemon groves and olive groves.
The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine is a monumental church built in the third century and rebuilt 1572, located in the historic center, at the eastern corner of Piazza Tasso. The Church Santa Maria del Carmine is built in Baroque style with a white-and-yellow stucco façade.
Corso Italia is the main street in Sorrento and was partially pedestrianised to let the locals and visitors alike take their "passeggiata" toward Piazza Tasso. Piazza Tasso is Sorrento’s main square, named after the Renaissance poet Torquato Tasso born in Sorrento.
Piazza Sant'Antonino is located in the very heart of Sorrento, in front of the Basilica di Sant'Antonino which is where the piazza takes its name from. From here you can reach Piazza Tasso, Villa Comunale Park and Via San Cesareo on foot in just a couple of minutes.
