Rust is set in a harsh, post-apocalyptic world where your main goal is to survive. The world is vast and open with a dynamic environment, meaning that weather and day-night cycles can affect gameplay.

One of the most important gameplay mechanics is base building. You use gathered resources to construct shelters and bases that protect you from the elements and other players. You can build simple wooden shacks or elaborate metal fortresses. This system adds a lot of replayability.
