BBC News followed our Marine Unit on patrol in Thames Estuary boarding boats and checking for signs of illegal activity as part of the Europe-wide Maritime Security Control Week.
Watch Sgt Alex Southgate, PC John Perry and PC Daren Chambers as they travel from the unit’s HQ at Burnham-on-Crouch and travel down the coast on the unit’s rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) to check on a number of commercial and private vessels.
Essex has a 562-mile coastline – the second longest in the UK – and the team work all-year-round using the Alert IV launch, the RHIB and a personal watercraft (jetski) to keep people safe on the water and protect our waterways from criminality.
