Officials had announced that Ukrainian forces would lose Mariupol to Russian forces within 24 hours, but it has been 48 hours since those claims were made.
Russia on Wednesday said more than 1,000 Ukrainian troops had surrendered in the port, but Ukraine did not comment on the claim.
It has been reported that Ukrainian soldiers in the region were losing their foothold and running out of ammunition.
