We take pride in building good solid homes, but have seen some structures that lack strength where it is needed. In this video I will be looking at three ways we made a huge gable end wall (on our current project) better than most. Tall walls like this can tend to be flimsy if special care isn’t taken to reinforce them. In this case, we used super long studs ripped from an LVL to prevent hing points to stiffen the tallest point. We also used a “prow” shape (part of the home design) on the front wall (15 degree angle) to break the front wall into 2 wall sections that brace each other at the point. Third, we left room for plywood “sheer columns,” which are needed with conventional framing to brace the wall diagonally and make it sturdy from side to side. I also give some advice for making repairs to walls that are complete, but not strong enough.
