German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck said Tuesday the government will no longer “be blackmailed” by China. Germany's economy ministry is considering a raft of measures to make business with China less attractive in order to reduce dependence on Chinese raw materials, batteries and semiconductors.
This is the first time the minister has made clear the tougher line was being translated into policy. Habeck did not outline new measures in full, but said they would include closer examination of Chinese investments in Europe, such as infrastructure.
Habeck also added that China’s Silk Road Initiative should not be supported out of fears that China may buy up Europe and influence law making.
