The Revenge of Analog
Real Things and Why They Matter
David Sax
How I consumed the book: Audible
Short Recap: The Revenge of Analog is about how the pendulum in the world swung so far toward technology and digital that now there is a correction and a renewed appreciation for physical things. Vinyl records have made a huge comeback with no just used records but modern and new albums being created as vinyl records. Paper has had a resurgence with many professionals preferring the feeling of a physical notebook to digital note apps and services. I am counted among these, as I always carry a notebook with me and would be lost without it.
Film both on the big screen and personal camera have made a comeback. There is a value and look that can only be accomplished with film, and for most of us the pictures we take will never see the light otherwise. I literally have picture frames in my house with no pictures. Along with film, board games have come back into popularity including new and old games.
Specialty magazines are popping up everywhere, ironically facilitated by the advancement of technology. The analog revolution seems to have come full circle when you find out that Amazon has opened a physical bookstore and as we now know has purchased wholefoods. The value of physical retail once dismissed has been reinvigorated. The book also covers the revenge of work, revenge of school and revenge of analog in digital, but the principle is that with the onslaught of digital has caused us to appreciate things that we can hold and touch.
Application to Business: The application to business can be very clear, in that the businesses that we thought were once dead may have new life. People exist in real life and although we love technology, we also long for things that really exist. There are certainly niches to be evaluated, and on a broader level an important take away. Just because a trend has changed does not mean that previous successful businesses are doomed. There must be a balance between adapting to technology without losing focus on what it is that a busines actually does.
Application to Life: This book reminded me to live in the moment. Technology will continue to change and advance for the better, or not. However, we can enjoy the things that are directly in front of us as well as the people that are physically in front of us.
Recommendation: Worth the Read
