The launch of Android XR has revealed that Samsung will be the first to launch hardware powered by the new OS. Samsung has now provided an early look at the headset before it officially debuts in 2025.
Google has announced Android XR, a new operating system for eXtended Realit devices, and in its press release, it revealed that Samsung will launch the first headset powered by the new OS. Ahead of the device's launch in 2025, Samsung has revealed a few details of the headset, which is code named Project Moohan. These details include an official render which gives us a first look at the upcoming headset.
According to Samsung's press release, the name Moohan is Korean for infinity and it represents its belief in delivering unparalleled, immersive experiences within an infinite space. It says Project Moohan will be lightweight and has been designed to ensure maximum comfort during use thanks to having ergonomically optimized hardware.
The render of the headset shows it in gray with a front akin to ski goggles and a pretty large facial interface. It has a strap that goes around the circumference of the head but lacks one that goes across. The back of the headset is padded to provide comfort. There is a silver frame that runs around the front and a button is visible at the top right corner.
Samsung says Project Moohan will have state-of-the-art displays, passthrough support, and natural multi-modal input. While technical details are being kept under wraps, Qualcomm has revealed that the headset will be powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, an updated version of the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 inside the Meta Quest 3S (available on Amazon for $299).
Samsung's headset is expected to be announced alongside the Galaxy S25 series early next year. However, there is a chance it won't be available to buy until later in the year, a move similar to what it did with its first smart ring, the Galaxy Ring.
