About the Speakers
Holly Smith began her archaeological career in 2009 in Ontario after completing her undergraduate degree in Archaeology and Cultural Anthropology at Wilfrid Laurier University. On a whim, she relocated to the Yukon in 2011 and continued consulting work before returning to school to complete her Masters degree at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Holly has been with the Archaeology Program since 2018 as a Development Assessment Archaeologist. Holly’s research interests include human/environmental interaction, faunal analysis, raw material sourcing and landscape use.
Michael Grooms has been practicing archaeology in the Yukon since 2010, primarily at the Little John Site in the Yukon borderlands. He completed his MA in 2010 at the University of New Mexico, reassessing artifact provenience at the Healy Lake Village site in Alaska. Since 2010, Michael has worked in academia and cultural resource management, focusing on organic artifacts found at Alaskan Ice Patches as well as geoarchaeology. Michael’s research interests include collaborative archaeology, geological dating methods applied to archaeological sites, and sediment and soil analysis to help contextualize complex archaeological sites.
