(26 May 2017) The Venezuelan opposition once again took to the streets of Caracas Friday, in what they've dubbed the March of the Liberators.
Starting from several different points of the capital city, protesters attempted to march toward the Paseo de los Proceres, or the Heroes of the Revolution Plaza, where they planned to pay homage to the fallen victims of the street protests that have paralyzed the South American nation for over 50 days.
The march was meant to be symbolic, as the plaza is a space where national revolutionary heroes like Simon Bolivar are revered. But it was repressed early on.
Early Friday, clashes between police and protesters were reported as groups assembled on street corners and then once again after the group began marching.
National police officers met protesters with tear gas and used water cannons to disperse them as they arrived on the Francisco Fajardo highway - a scene that has been seen daily since the protests began.
At least 55 people have been killed, over 1,000 have been injured; 2,700 arrested and at least 350 shops have been looted since the anti-government protests to oust President Nicolas Maduro began nearly seven weeks ago.
