Enjoy learning more about Amerind’s "American Art Form: A Century of A:shiwi (Zuni) and Diné (Navajo) Jewelry" exhibit.
Starting seven years ago, Amerind began working on a remarkable gift—the Vander Wagen jewelry collection and archives. The Vander Wagen family collection includes jewelry made by Diné (Navajo) and A:shiwi (Zuni) artists over the course of a century. The collection includes a century of priceless business records. Currently we have over 8,500 jewelry pieces cataloged with a few thousand more to go.
Why is this collection more important than ever? When a A:shiwi artist visits and asks to see jewelry made his grandmother, we can put those pieces in his hands right away. When students of history want to learn about artists and the economy—we can put the right historical resources into those researchers’ hands. When planning new exhibits, we can identify the works of particular families, artists, time periods, or artistic techniques.
The Vander Wagen collection is one of the largest and best documented collections of its kind in the world. The work to organize and preserve such a complex large collection can span many years. While current community needs are overwhelming, your help and support will allow this ongoing work to continue through our crisis.
