Crocodiles have lived on our planet since the time of the dinosaurs. They are distant relatives of these giant lizards, who for some reason were able to survive the asteroid impact. Scientists believe that several important features helped them in this:
• Crocodiles are adapted to life both in water and on land;
• They are able to slow down their metabolism and get by with much less food, waiting out adverse conditions;
• At the initial stage of development, the embryos of all modern crocodiles are absolutely identical, therefore, they have a unique mechanism for accelerated evolution;
At the same time, most likely only some species of Mesozoic crocodiles were able to survive in the conditions of a nuclear winter and the cataclysms that followed it.
