ISRAEL SOCCER
World Cup qualifier. Australia defeat Israel 2-1.
Australia greatly improved their chances of reaching the World Cup finals by beating Israel 2-1 in Tel Aviv on Tuesday (8/10). The victory makes them clear favourites to win the Oceania group ahead of Israel. That would take them through to a play-off with Scotland, runners-up in European group six. The winners would qualify for Mexico.
Israel's recent success in the World Cup qualifying rounds drew a crowd of 35,000 to Tel Aviv. They saw a rough match, with both sides guilty of over-physical play. In the 22nd minute the Italian referee Luigi Agnolini sent the Australian coach Frank Arok from the touchline for making comments during the game. Further drama occurred seven minutes from the interval. An Israeli attack ended with the Australian goalkeeper Terry Greedy leaving the field with a head injury.
The goals came in the first twenty minutes of the second half. John Kismina, formerly with the English club Arsenal, struck twice in the first five minutes after halftime. As the rough play continued, Israel reduced the defecit through Armeli in the 65th minute. Five minutes before the end the referee again took action to curb violent play, sending off the Australian Ken Murphy. But the effect of his action was spoilt when the Italian official later admitted that he had sent off the wrong player.
