On 21 April 2024, two days before St George's Day, (which is on the 23rd of April), l shot this video in Trafalgar Square after the London Marathon.
My parents emigrated to England in 1955 along with two of my siblings. My mother, Rose was 33 and my father, Charles was 39. She caught pneumonia but thankfully recovered. He looked for and found work.
They were met with curiosity and kindness by many but also faced suspicion and hostility from others.
Over the next decade, they brought over their remaining 4 children, who had been looked after by Mercy, our loving grandmother.
Despite the challenges they faced, over the years I heard my father say that England was
“ one of the best countries in the world “. It enabled him, a hard worker, to reunite his family , buy a home and live a more prosperous life.
I hope everyone in England and beyond had a happy St George’s Day
