The Caribbean Tourism Organization has called for international backup to deal with an influx of sargassum seaweed affecting tourism on several islands. In Saint Lucia, the seaweed is affecting fisheries and agriculture, and will probably damage the mangrove community. On the east coast of the island, seaweed is killing underwater animals that cannot get oxygen, clogging up the engines of fishing vessels, and threatening the health of islanders.
