In US news and current events today, the coronavirus pandemic has sparked the early release of incarcerated people across the U.S. Now actor Alec Baldwin, who frequently portrays President Donald Trump on 'Saturday Night Live,' is calling on New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to release inmates most vulnerable to COVID-19 amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has hit New York state especially hard.
'Releasing the elderly, pregnant women, and others who are immunocompromised, as well as anyone within a year of their release dates, would show great leadership. And that's what New York needs now,' 'SNL' Trump actor Alec Baldwin said to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Nearly 300 incarcerated people and 1,000 prison staff have tested positive for COVID-19 in New York state alone, where the coronavirus has hit very hard. New York City alone has released roughly 2,000 people from prisons and jails because of the coronavirus, but activists say it’s not enough. So activists, including Alec Baldwin, are urging Andrew Cuomo to grant clemency and pardons to elderly incarcerated people and those otherwise vulnerable to COVID-19.
