STORYLINE
Holding wooden crosses, Orthodox Christians poured into the cobbled streets of Jerusalem's Old City to observe Good Friday, the day when Christians believe Jesus was crucified.
The pilgrims are walking along the 14 stations of the "Via Dolorosa", Latin for "Way of the Suffering", retracing what tradition says were Jesus' last steps before his crucifixion.
Orthodox Christians, who follow the old Julian calendar, mark Easter this week.
Roman Catholic and Protestant congregations that observe the new Gregorian calendar, held their Easter celebrations at the end of March.
The processions will be followed by an overnight vigil at the traditional site of Christ's crucifixion and burial.
The Good Friday procession will end at the church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Christian tradition says Jesus was crucified and buried before his resurrection on Easter Sunday.
On Saturday there will be the ancient ceremony of the "holy fire", in which a candle said to have been miraculously ignited is passed among worshippers.
