"This is the first time in my life I've been speechless - this is unbelievable! Talk about the most exciting point in time in your life - the Nobel Peace Prize and it's because of the WFP family. They're out there in the most difficult, complex places in the world where there's war, conflict climate extremes - it doesn't matter, they're out there and they deserve this award. Wow, wow, wow. I can't believe it."
STORYLINE:
The head of the World Food Programme has told The Associated Press of his surprise at finding out the organisation had won the Nobel Peace Prize.
“I think this is the first time in my life I've been speechless," David Beasley told AP from Niger.
He said he found out about the "unbelievable" honour from a WFP media officer who had just been informed by the AP.
Beasley also paid tribute to WFP staff around the world, "out there in the most difficult, complex places in the world".
The United Nations organisation won the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to combat hunger and food insecurity around the globe.
The WFP provides assistance to almost 100 million people in 88 countries around the world last year.
