Hi I’m Vivien Williams with a Mayo Clinic News Network Headline.
It is national infant immunization week, and the CDC the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says vaccinating your newborn baby is essential. Immunizations can and do safely prevent many dangerous and deadly diseases. Mayo Clinic pediatrician Dr. Robert Jacobson agrees.
“Polio, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox, hepatitis b, hepatitis a, pneumococcal infections, influenza. We can really dramatically reduce the harm, the actual death rate associated with these diseases.”
And that’s just a partial list. Dr. Jacobson says he understands some parents might worry these immunizations are dangerous, but he emphasizes that years of extensive research shows they are safe and key to keeping your baby and the world from contracting many deadly diseases. Take measles, for example. Dr. Jacobson says research shows outbreaks can happen in areas where parents either opt out or delay getting their kids vaccinated.
“These diseases are real. They’re often just a plane ride away, and our vaccines are our best defense against them. But they only work if you give them to your babies and you give them to them on time.”
