(5 Jul 2021) CANNES ARTISTIC DIRECTOR THIERRY FREMAUX ON WHY NO NETFLIX AND NO EMBRACING AT THIS YEAR'S FESTIVAL
The rules have been made clear for the attendees of this year's Cannes Film Festival.
Speaking at a press conference Monday (5 JULY 2021), a day before the opening, Cannes' artistic director Thierry Fremaux outlined the festival's approach to social distancing measures for guests and stars.
"When you're in the streets of Cannes you don't need to wear a mask, when you enter the sort of festival bubble to go out the red carpet, you have to wear a mask," explained Fremaux.
"So, our teams will wear masks. The photographers, of course, and festival-goers, they will go out to the red carpet with a mask, the stars and the film. We'll be able to take off their masks for the photos and then at the top of the stairs."
Fremaux said it was important to be reasonable and very careful as the "epidemic is not conquered."
"A week ago we said no, no masks because you're looking ahead to the distance. And we thought, well, we want to be exemplary. So maybe people should wear their masks and no one's going to hug or embrace each other at the top of the stairs either. We want to be very cautious and exemplary."
One thing you won't see in Cannes: any Netflix movies. The festival, which requires films in competition to have a French theatrical release, and streamer are still at odds.
When asked why he chose not to include films from the streaming giant, Fremaux sai,d "give me a name of a director discovered by some platforms. Not yet, after five, ten years," said
"We just celebrated last year the 125 years of the invention of cinema, so platforms, it's, let's say, 10 years. So let's see if in more than one century we will celebrate the birthday of the platform. And I'm not sure. For now the platforms, they are they are recruiting only film makers."
Monday also saw the unveiling of this year's Palme d'Or trophy. Designed by Chopard, the award will be goto one of the 24 films in official competition.
