Florian was born in the Netherlands and studied at Delft University of Technology where he received his master’s degree in 1999. He then went on to work at SANAA where he was in charge of the design and realization of the Glass Pavilion at the Toledo Museum of Art and the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. Florian then co-founded SO-IL in 2008 along with Jing Liu.
From their website: “In a digitized world that increasingly draws one inward, our architecture is outward-looking, engendering meaningful dialogue with what is materially and psychologically outside of ourselves.” The firm has completed projects in the cities of Leon, Lisbon, Seoul, and their hometown of Brooklyn. SO-IL has been recognized internationally with some awards including the MOMA PS1 Young Architects Prize in 2010, AIA New Practices Award in 2010, Prix de Rome in 2014, the J. Irwin and Xenia S. Miller Prize in 2019, and many more. Their collections have been included in the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Victoria, and many private collections.
