Sonnenberg House by Alexander Brenner Architects
www.alexanderbrenner.de
About the project:
The property is located in the interior of a residential quarter with a loose building structure. A property access leads the arriving via a small "piazza" at the garage to the house entrance.
A large void above the entrance connects all three storeys of the house and provides a variety of visual relationships. It is illuminated by a large glass surface and a skylight through which a sunbeam falls deep into the house at any time of the day.
A sculptural staircase behind a room-dividing wall panel leads along an exposed concrete wall to the ground floor.
By layering a single-grain concrete using light and dark aggregate a zebra pattern was created that extends over three floors to the skylight and also ensures a high sound absorption in the open house.
The ground floor is an open room continuum, the predominantly floor to ceiling glazing orienting south and west over the garden and the valley. From the open hall one reaches the living area with fireplace, as well as the dining area and the kitchen, which is adjoined by the breakfast and pool terrace in the south.
On the slope side, the kitchen is comlemented by a side kitchen whose access is integrated into the back of the kitchen.
Upstairs are the private rooms of the family of four with their balconies and loggias.
About the atelier:
The Stuttgart-based atelier Alexander Brenner Architects is best known for his houses and villas seen by many in the tradition of classical modernism or even Bauhaus. Common ground for all of Alexander Brenner`s houses is the comprehensive detailing and planning of all interiors and objects, such as cupboards, kitchens and built-in furniture, which are designed and manufactured for each project. Brenner also designs the corresponding gardens. The soft curved, sensual forms contrast the unique, bright white architectural sculptures. Brenner`s residential sculptures set standards both in functionality and aesthetics as well as in sustainability. For the architect this is not only an issue of energy consumption, but also a matter of form. Numerous prizes, awards and publications in journals and books confirm the high international recognition that the buildings of Alexander Brenner enjoy today.
