Here’s some rare, and historical vintage 1946 West Virginia glass factory footage, recently obtained from the storage vaults and brought back too see the light of day. This was originally filmed in color on reel-to-reel tape and professionally narrated with the typical “Trans-Atlantic” dialect that was popular In the 1930’s and ‘40’s. The original footage may have been produced to promote West Virginian commerce and was allegidly sponsored by Exxon gas.
There are four clips here.
We are taken to an automotive sheet/safety glass factory, then to the Akro Agate marble factory in Clarksburg W.V.
It was very rare that the marble factories of that time period would allow cameras or any filming to take place, in order to hold their marble-making trade secrets, and glass recipes from their competitors. These marble manufacturers were generally in fierce competition with each other, and vying for their share of that challenging market. 🔵
This video also includes some mid-century glass blowing techniques, with good views and demonstrations of how certain glass pieces were crafted. The final clip shows some West Virginia stained glass being produced.
Thank you Mike Johnson, Joseph Vassilatos and Jonathan Beal for your help in making this video possible.
