“The old King of Hallownest... He must have been desperate to save his crumbling little world. The sacrifices he imposed on others... all for nothing.” -The Hunter
The world of Hollow Knight is underscored by the presence, or lack thereof, of the Pale King, the previous ruler of the fading kingdom of Hallownest. His arrival in Hallownest brought sentience and development to the kingdom of bugs, but the Infection that followed his arrival brought about devastation and ruin upon the newborn kingdom. The Infection would turn the peaceful bugs of Hallownest into mindless, aggressive creatures, and spread with indiscriminate fury.
“Pale Court” follows the story of Hallownest: its rise under the rule of the Pale King; the appearance of the Infection; the King’s increasingly desperate and merciless attempts to contain its spread; and finally, at the song’s climax, after all his attempts have failed, his retreat into his palace within the forgotten dream of his fallen kingdom.
