Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has urged residents to not “get carried away” with the state’s downward trend of daily COVID-19 cases.
The decrease in coronavirus infections has been described by the premier as a “positive” development after the state recorded 1,466 new locally acquired cases and an additional eight deaths overnight.
However, Mr Andrews cautioned locals against complacency, warning the state’s COVID-19 crisis was far from over.
“Today, we see the first seven-day average of cases where they’ve been declining since August,” he said.
“That’s positive, we obviously hope that trend continues.
“Obviously this is one week and it’s just a handful of days and it shouldn’t be seen to signal somehow over.
“We’ve got to finish this off, all of us, and I’m confident that we will and the most important thing that we can all do is to go and get our first dose or bring forward our second dose if we’ve already had our first dose.
“Go and get vaccinated, that’s the most important thing.”
