A celebration of our amazing NHS & raising much needed funds to purchase vital surgical equipment.
John King:
• The John King Brain Tumour Foundation is in memory of John king; a much-loved and in-ternationally renowned chef and beloved husband, father and friend.
The Foundation
• The Foundation supports the Atkinson Morley Wing of St George’s Hospital London which treats brain diseases and disorders. It is here that John King received such dedi-cated care during his brave fight with a glioblastoma brain tumour; a condition from which he sadly passed away in November 2016.
The Fundraising Objective: State of the Art Microscope and Roof Garden
• With your support we aim to fund the purchase of a much-needed second £150,000 state-of-the-art surgical microscope. This special equipment – not available through NHS Funding - enables surgeons to see further into the brain, so they can remove more of the tumour during surgery; vital to increase a patients’ lifespan.
o The microscope is also used for other paediatric and adult neurosurgery including spinal cord surgery, repairing ruptured blood vessels in the brain, repair of spinal bifida in children, trauma, deep brain stimulation for Parkinsons and many other conditions
o The microscope also has a “teaching arm” which enables students to watch and learn remotely during live operations.
• Funds also go towards the upkeep of the beautiful and restful Mckissock Ward Roof Gar-den at St George’s; a hidden treasure John discovered during his treatment and which was in need of TLC to restore to its former glory. It has since been transformed into an oasis where patients and their families can escape the ward and see the sky, surrounded by trees and plants.
Covid-19 garden respite support:
• During the Covid-19 Pandemic the garden also provided a much welcome respite for staff from the intensity of their dedicated work, enabling them to escape into nature and fresh air.
