Approach and landing on runway 08L at Munich Airport ( MUC / EDDM ) in Germany on a beautiful morning with some low ground fog and haze. Capains view. Airbus A320. Recorded in 4k.
On this morning, during our approach, the runway was almost clear of clouds and haze/fog but the surrounding grass areas were coverd with a low density fog layer.
Munich airport consists of 2 parallel runway systems. Each runway measures 4000 m (13120 feet) by 60 meters (200 feet). The area of the airport is called "Erdinger Moos" and is known to be very foggy. So all runways are equipped for automatic airliner landings with instrument landing systems CAT IIIb. This allows landings with an RVR (runway visual range / visibility along the runway) of only 75 meters, if the airplane is certified accordingly.
Sometimes there is only one runway covered with fog. So all arriving planes who are not capable of low visibility automatic landings are routed to the runway with the better visibility.
Due to the large amount of traffic, ATC (air traffic control) usually issues a lot of different speed instructions to the arriving traffic to keep everybody separated from each other.
Munich Airport is located near the city of Freising, 29 km or 17 miles northeast of Munich. The airport is named by Franz Josef Strauss, a former Bavarian governor, who was a private pilot and initiated the airport project. The airport started operation in 1992. Before that, the Munich traffic landed in Munich-Riem, a small airport, close to the city of Munich. Airport Munich-Riem is now closed.
