Established in 1798, the Marine Hospital Service or “MHS” provided medical care to merchant seamen. In the August of 1887, a young physician received permission to set up a one-room research laboratory on New York’s Staten Island. His name was Dr. Joseph J. Kinyoun, and he had joined the Marine Hospital Service in 1886. Joseph was born in East Bend, North Carolina, a scenic location in the Appalachian region. Dr. Kinyoun’s one-room laboratory, also known as the “Hygienic Laboratory,” was the first national laboratory dedicated to improving public heath in the U.S. Using his Zeiss microscope and training in bacteriology, the young physician identified cholera in America. During those times, the cholera pandemic was spreading rapidly across America. Over the years, the “Hygienic Laboratory” relocated to several places before finally settling down in Bethesda, Maryland. The “Hygienic Laboratory” got a new name nearly 8 years before it moved to Maryland. Today, this laboratory has expanded into more than 27 institutes and centers. Together, they constitute the U.S. National Institutes of Health or “NIH.”

Top 10 reasons to opt for video-based science communication and research promotion:
1. Legitimately increase your citation count
2. Boost your altmetric score
3. Popularize your research findings on social media
4. Simplify your research for the lay audience (platform such as Mendeley or ResearchGate are great, but you still need a certain degree of knowledge to be able to comprehend most of the posts on these platform and that’s where effective science communication comes into picture)
5. Showcase your research work to policy makers
6. Combat misinformation by sharing authentic research findings
7. Facilitate the process of establishing meaningful research collaborations
8. Increase your journal's/website's/blog's global reach
9. Capture new markets for your commercial STEM products
10. Increase your odds of future funding
