The Indian Coast Guard is strengthening its presence and assets in the strategically positioned Lakshadweep and Minicoy islands. In the Indian Ocean Region, where India has been setting up multiple bases since 2004, ICG is building a new jetty at Androth island. This will enable it to position new and larger ships to keep an eye on the region and it is expected to be commissioned shortly. The ICG plans to build an air enclave at Minicoy from where it would be able to keep an eye on the entire region. ICG has deployed its radars, ships and coastal defence infrastructure to protect the area. Indian Coast Guard stations in Lakshadweep are command and control of District HQ-12 with three commissioned bases at Kavaratti, Minicoy and Androth.11 Officers and 86 men are presently posted in the Lakshadweep and Minicoy islands to safeguard the national maritime interest.
