Geneva Steel in Utah was created to help produce steel for the World War Two effort against the attacks from Japan and the Nazi war machine. It was strategically located near iron & coal mines, and a large fresh water source for cooling. Due to concerns about air pollution from the 1970's to the late 1990's the US Environmental Protection Agency enacted strict regulations that made domestic steel production less profitable. When Chinese steel became a cheaper alternative Geneva's owners knew their days were numbered. The steel plant was closed in November of 2001. The water ways and the slag piles are about all that is left.
