CROSSROADS i24NEWS' senior national correspondent Michael Shure breaks down everything you need to know about the surprise rise of democratic presidential nominee Pete Buttigieg who could be the first openly gay US President.
Story:
Pete Buttigieg, the gay, liberal mayor of a small American city in the conservative bastion of Indiana, officially launched his presidential bid in April, joining the crowded field of Democrats vying for their party's nomination in 2020.
A Harvard graduate, a Rhodes Scholar, and an Afghanistan war veteran, 37-year-old Buttigieg was virtually unknown when he entered the race for the Democratic nomination.
He is the two-term mayor of his hometown of South Bend -- a left-leaning bubble in America's so-called "Rust Belt" region, where the decline of industries such as steel and automobile manufacturing has hurt local economies.
He has since emerged as one of the most closely watched candidates in an unusually large field, placing fifth in a new CBS poll of battleground states.
A Fox News poll showed him with a one point lead over US President Donald Trump if the elections were held today.
Buttigieg, who is credited with helping turn South Bend around, has couched himself as a can-do reformer who can speak to voters across the political spectrum. The message has helped catapult him from relative obscurity to becoming one of the leading Democrats in the crowded presidential race.
Voters in states such as Michigan and Wisconsin helped hand Republican US President Donald Trump his victory in the 2016 election.
