What Does Guilty Beyond A Reasonable Doubt Mean?
In order to obtain a conviction in a criminal case, the prosecution must prove that the defendant is guilty “beyond a reasonable doubt.”
This is a heavy burden. In the abstract, the concept of “beyond a reasonable doubt” is difficult to define precisely. One way to think about it is to consider what it does not mean. “Beyond a reasonable doubt” does not mean beyond all doubt, as that standard is impossibly high. Nor does it mean “more likely than not,” as that standard is too low, given all that is at stake in a criminal case.
Practically speaking, “beyond a reasonable doubt” means that, after hearing all the evidence, the jurors are truly and steadfastly convinced that the defendant is guilty of the crimes charged.
