Crayfish or Crawdad, this fly simply catches fish. Trout, bass and carp are among the species I have caught using variations of this pattern. This fly is a simplified version of the Svend's Cray Cray and is one that will test a few of your tying skills and probably poke your finger a time or two. After tying this, you will feel more comfortable in wrapping hackle, dubbing loops, and applying UV resin and shaping it.
To fish this fly, I typically have a longer leader and floating line from the shore. Generally, most takes are on the pauses as the fly sits in a defensive position on the bottom or on a rocks edge. Bass seem to also take the fly on the quick strips casting at angles from the shore and retrieving.
Its a really fun fly to tie and even more fun to fish.
