This is Sega's Ferrari F355 Challenge that was produced in 1999 and developed by Yu Suzuki.
This game is actually a full race simulator and with the setting I am using is very realistic and very challenging to drive. The machine features a realistic 6-speed gated shifter or paddle shifters, force feedback steering, stereo sound with subwoofer, and 3 27" inch monitors.
The hardware consists of a 4-board NAOMI system, three of which drives the screens and the fourth drives the programming and audio. There is also a dedicated audio amplifier.
Unlike previous driving games Mr. Suzuki (and others) have produced this one is more of a simulator and is pretty tough to master. You cannot add more credits to continue. You either drive well enough to continue or the game is over. To get first place you have to drive a nearly flawless race without hitting a wall or missing too many gears.
I mistakenly said I received 1st place at the end of the race, but actually placed 3rd. This is the best run I have had so far.
This is a great game for your collection if you want a realistic simulator as there still today is not one that outperforms this one in driving characteristics. You need some room, though, because it is almost 8 ft wide and 7 ft long. It also weighs nearly 1000 lbs, so moving it is not much fun.
