The year is coming to a close. Most grapes have been harvested – except for small amounts left in the vineyards for Ice Wine or other specialty wines
2024 did not feel like it in many countries, but this year is almost certainly hotter than any year on record and it is likely the first year to have crossed the 1,5 degrees Celsius mark above the pre-industrial average.
While this is the global trend on a national and regional level the year was much more complex and many wineries experienced a complicated season.
So let's go around the globe – across the main regions in Europe to the US - to check how the wine-growing regions have fared and what we can expect from the 2024 wines.
Germany has experienced a strange year with many curveballs. This year's production is estimated to be 10% below the 10-year average at 7.9 million hectolitres of must.
The year saw significant weather issues, including late spring frosts affecting flowering, and heavy summer rainfall impacting vine health.
Spring frost has become a big issue in many growing regions. As the winters are less cold and our springs overall warmer vegetation starts earlier.
Sudden temperature changes – which have occurred already in the past – have a more negative impact on the young and less protected vine vegetation.
Not all German regions experienced the frost and diseases equally: Eastern regions faced major reductions: Saxony and Saale-Unstrut: Reported losses of up to 73%.
That’s massive … I mean imagine you have a business and you have to reduce your production to close to one-quarter of what you are usually making. Most companies would disappear if that happens.
Fortunately, wineries are aware of that problem and tend to make sure that they can continue operating, even under those conditions and there is also insurance that you can take out for those catastrophic losses.
