A popular tour from San Pedro de Atacama combines the Reserve Nacional Los Flamencos (flamingos), Miniques and Miscanti Altiplantic Lagoons. It is important to leave the hotel no later than 7:30a to see the Flamingos feeding since they fly away when done. There are three kinds of Flamingos that can be seen in this reserve: Chilean, James and Andes, a gorgeous sight.
The Miniques and Miscanti Lagoons are located at a seriously high 4300 meters/14,107 feet and a few Flamingos, Coots (a bird) and Vicunas lurked around its shores. But our highlight while driving down from the lagoons was a Culpeo Fox who came trotting down the road, sat itself down in rocks from an ancient volcanic flow by the car and posed for pictures! What a beauty and so exciting to see a wild fox up close.
