In this month's edition of Second Sunday, Channel 8 Eyewitness News profiles the new Edwards Intuity Valve. Bryan Heart is the first hospital in Nebraska to utilize this revolutionary technology for aortic valve replacement. Approved by the FDA in August, the Edwards Intuity Valve allows surgeons to implant the valve faster than traditional methods. This decreases bypass time and makes the operation safer for patients, which also improves recovery time. Jerry Renaud, a journalism professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was the first patient to receive this type of valve. Born with bicuspid aortic valve disease, Renaud underwent the procedure one week ago and is already seeing a change for the better.
Every patient who receives a CT scan at Bryan that includes the chest will have their images reviewed to look for abnormalities. In Mary Jo's case, a routine appendectomy turned into a lung cancer diagnosis. Because of the lung nodule program, her cancer was caught early and, through surgery and treatment, she's beaten the potentially fatal disease.
