STORYLINE
Israel continued to bomb Gaza with more than 20 pre-dawn airstrikes on Thursday, one day after a three-hour lull to allow in humanitarian aid.
And scarcely had the day begun when what appeared to be a rocket left its trail across the sky.
Israel had resumed its Gaza offensive on Wednesday after a three-hour lull to allow in humanitarian aid, conducting heavy bombing around suspected smuggling tunnels near the border with Egypt after Hamas responded with a rocket barrage.
Airstrikes continued on Thursday, and there were clashes between Israeli armed forces and Hamas militants in southern Gaza.
In another development, Israeli forces fired mortars across the border into southern Lebanon on Thursday after rockets were fired into northern Israel, Lebanese security officials said.
Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the rockets fell around the town of Nahariya, five miles (eight kilometres) south of the Lebanese border early on Thursday.
Israeli police said at least three rockets were fired and rescue services reported at least one person was lightly wounded.
At the same time as Thursday's northern barrage, six rockets from Gaza hit towns in southern Israel.
Earlier the night sky was lit up with the flashes of explosions and the showers of sparks which followed them, replacing the plumes of smoke which hang over Gaza during the day.
Local television showed occasional flares snaking across the sky.
But as dawn approached, Israel continued its Gaza offensive, with Palestinians reporting more than 20 pre-dawn airstrikes killing one person and wounding ten.
There were reports early on Thursday of clashes between Israeli armoured forces and Hamas militants in southern Gaza.
Palestinians said an airstrike in Gaza City destroyed a mosque and wounded 15 people.
Israel's chief army spokesman said 120 suspected militants have been captured. He also said soldiers conducting searches have uncovered many explosive devices and tunnels.
Israeli airstrikes killed 29 Palestinians on Wednesday after leaflets were dropped warning residents to leave the area "because Hamas uses your houses to hide and smuggle military weapons."
Palestinian medical officials in the northern Gaza Strip say an Israeli airstrike killed three militants.
They said the three men were members of a rocket launching squad affiliated with the Islamic Jihad militant group.
They said the airstrike occurred in a crowded area about 150 yards (meters) from a hospital. Some 12 bystanders were wounded.
The Israeli army had no immediate comment, but it has repeatedly accused militants of seeking cover in crowded civilian areas.
The casualties brought the total Palestinian death toll during Israel's 12-day assault to more than 700 and drove home the complexities of finding a diplomatic endgame for Israel's Gaza invasion.
