(11 Jun 2016) Thousands of people took to the streets of Rome and Athens on Saturday as part of gay pride celebrations.
In Italy, the atmosphere was jubilant following the recent approval of the civil union law, which permits to same sex couple to be recognised..
LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) activists from all over the country attended the march with dancers in colourful costumes.
The parade made its way through the streets of Rome, past the Colosseum and other ancient monuments, with participants dancing to the beat of pop music.
Many supporters came from other cities to support the march and to campaign for more recognition for same-sex couples, such as the possibility to adopt children or step-children.
The Athens event was in a similar vein, with thousands parading to music on foot or on floats under this year's slogan, "you are not born a man/woman, you become one."
